EP Review: bludnymph – Drool

Adopting the bludnymph persona you have the lovely Kya Hansen, she’s a sterling singer/ songwriter who comes all the way from Canada but is now based in Los Angeles. It was January 2023 when I was introduced to bludnymph’s wondrous works, the single in question being Lights Out which enthralled me to the point where I had to delve into the back catalogue. She made her debut with Wishin’ in 2021 and since then she’s unveiled a glut of infectious pop bops and Hansen she uses YouTube and TikTok as an outlet to showcase new material. Well since my ears were blessed with Lights Out I’ve been keeping tabs on her musical career.

Drool was the deliciously dark debut from the phenomenal bludnymph, released 25th October 2023 this amazing addiction comprised of 9 originals 3 of which received the single treatment. Now bludnymph is an intoxicating bled of pop meets rap, those lyrics are super sassy but at the end of the day bludnymph is just a persona but (from watching Instagram Lives) Kya Hansen is sweet as a button. The choice of opener was Body Parts emitting plenty of darkness, this was a pop bop which hooked me from beginning to end. This had been perfectly penned as this was an enchanting earworm and rather graphic at the same time. Not that long ago bludnymph dropped the official music video which isn’t for the faint hearted as it featured blood, a frankenstein esque autopsy and zombies. Lights Out featured in the trailer to Amazon’s Gen V and it’s an utter spectacle which packed a punch. I have a soft spot for this number as it served as my introduction to bludnymph, well everything about Lights Out was spot on, that toe tapping melody was rather upbeat, Kya’s vibrant vocals were both succulently sweet/ fierce whilst the lyrical content told you not to get on the wrong side of bludnymph “Who the f*ck do you think you are?/ Play with my heart, I’ll tear you apart”. Actually she is correct bludnymph could be all your biggest fears as if you burn her once she’ll come back ten times stronger. Still Lights Out was a blinding banger accompanied by whimsical words which became more intense throughout. Following on you then had Grim Reaper and this was a enthralling pop anthem which Kya delivered to perfection. You had an infectious upbeat melody, those tantalising tones were sticky sweet whilst the lyrical content told the story of being in love with death. Both this and ORAL HEX (spell on you) were giving me Kim Petras Turn Off The Light vibes. Actually this number showcased Hansen’s impressive rapping skills which oozed plenty of attitude. The sumptuous synths and dazzling delivery resulted in something which slayed. DarkMagicSexySilly (origin story) was a game changer. It kicked off as a beautiful ballad, then the drumbeats came in which gave the track that extra oomph. Kya’s vocals were rather tender and those words had me smiling all throughout especially the part where she mentioned “Let’s have ourselves a baby/ And we’ll call her demon darling”. In a nutshell DarkMagicSexySilly told you not to judge a book by its cover, bludnymph may look fierce but behind the mask she has a beautiful personality. I’ve said the word bop plenty of times but End Of The World took everything to the next level. This exceptional cut was an amazing anthem which hit me like a full on force. It painted the picture of a girl whose unable to have meaningful relationships and the official music video touched on how money is the motivator for her decisions (as you can see from the final warnings) “Yes sir, I’ma do it again/ I’m f*ckin, him, her, probably they and them/ It’s a 10/10 u should recommend/ This p*ssy so good, it’s on the walk of femme”. If I was to sum up Personal Pornstar in one word it would have to be mesmeric. This was a fun fueled jam which gets better with every single listen. Watch Me was a fast paced rapped original which packed a fierce bite. Everything about this compelling cut was pure perfection, the instrumentation created an eerie atmosphere, Kya’s vocal tones were a breath of fresh air and the lyrical content radiated a sultriness. Drool then concluded with 6izarre RAVE which featured 6arelyhuman. Anyhow this was a gleaming gem that’s perfect for any club.

All in all Drool was a sheer masterpiece and the mix of pop meets rap resulted in something that had plenty of replay factor. Each original featured slapped and Hansen’s vocal tones were out of this world leaving me to anticipate the next fix. The songwriting was extremely impeccable (Kya co wrote Drool with various songwriters) and this showed me bludnymph has something special. Each track featured was sheer spectacles, there were songs which emitted sass whilst you had DarkMagicSillySexy which had a gentler vibe. Also the raps had me envisioning Nicki Minaj and at times Kali Uchis. The fact Drool dropped at Halloween time was utter genius as this was full of spooky songs, actually it’s bludnymph’s very own take on Kim Petras’s Turn Off The Light LP.
