Introducing: Lucy Deakin

Coming all the way from Staffordshire but based in Manchester you have the insanely talented singer/ songwriter Lucy Deakin. Recently I’ve been introduced to this tremendous talent and I must say I’m thoroughly impressed with what I’ve read and heard. Anyways Deakin’s introduction to music started at the age of 14 as she began to perform all around Staffordshire showcasing her exceptional material. It was then in 2015 when she realised her passion was in both performing and writing.

We then get to 2019 and this was the year Lucy emerged onto the scene, she already received support from the likes of Spotify and BBC Introducing (whom tipped her to be big in 2020). Throughout 2019 Deakin dropped a multitude of singles under the guise of Lucy all of these being gleaming gems which showcased her raw potential. Towards the end of 2019 Lucy supported Call Me Loop at Night People in Manchester and then you had the Roe support slot at Manchester’s Yes! Basement at the end of February 2020.

Things then took a turn for the worst and the live music scene was completely obliterated. Planned tours or live performances were either postponed to a later date or they were shelved. Deakin was even invited to perform at SXSW in America which didn’t happen and this shutdown was purely down to the COVID 19 pandemic. At the time of writing things have started to re open and full capacity gigs have re convened here in the United Kingdom.

Lucy Deakin even had her debut headline tour scheduled for April 2021, this was to back sophomore EP I Got Bored but the decision was made to postpone/ reschedule. That tour will happen this November and this time it will back the in your head i’m probably crying EP. But knowing Deakin she’ll perform an epic set featuring tracks from both releases.

Anyhow I came across Lucy’s music purely by accident, I remember viewing Instagram stories, then a sponsored story for Deakin’s How To Lose A Guy popped up. This led me to explore the back catalogue and these outstanding originals were incredibly addictive.

Can’t Get You: Lucy Deakin made her musical emergence 1st February 2019 with this delightful debut. Having been thoroughly invested with her impeccable material, I’ve listened to the entire back catalogue multiple times. Anyhow Can’t Get You is a gleaming gem which easily puts a smile on any face. Everything about this tempting treat was spot on, emitting plenty of dance pop vibes this was an enthralling debut that’s been crafted to perfection. The majestic melody had a tropical flavour to it, Lucy’s vibrant vocals were a breath of fresh air whilst those luscious lyrics were super sweet and heart warming at the same time. Can’t Get You centred on being in love to the point where that person is always on your mind “Can’t get you out of my head”. Here you have a boy whose giving mixed signals, the girl holds a torch for him but those feelings felt are unspoken.

one night: 15th March 2019 saw the unveiling of this sparking sophomore via Scruff Of The Neck Records and it’s literally a sheer spectacle. Radiating plenty of pop goodness, one night was a fast paced feel good original which enchanted me on the very first listen. Other than those sleek verses you also had a captivating chorus which resonated dub step vibes. Just like Can’t Get You this revolved around falling in love, one night was a refreshing treat aided by compelling lyrics and a toe tapping melody.

Breathless: Breathless was released 26th April 2019 and yet again it was a captivating cut which I fell for hook, line and sinker. Delivered at a slow pace, this was a beautiful ballad accompanied by whimsical words and then you had Deakin’s candy coated tones that were pleasant on the ear. Those verses were entrancing whilst the chorus was extremely upbeat. Whilst both Can’t Get You and one night centred on falling in love, this enchanting tune told the empowering realisation that you don’t really need a boy in your life. Whilst words like this could point to a fractured relationship (and therefore having a weakness for this boy) I strongly think that this decision saw her putting herself first “Thought I needed you/ That I had to be with you/ And now/ (But I don’t need you)”.

i don’t wanna be her: It was July 19th when Lucy unleashed her 4th single and this was in fact the last original to be released in 2019. Everything about this end product was literally spot on, the melodic arrangement was fresh and funky whilst Deakin’s vibrant vocals were succulently sweet. Prior to listening to this number I’d expected it to be a ballad which had all the feels. Well my assumptions were completely wrong, i don’t wanna be her was an upbeat song packed with lyrics which told the story of a boy who gets a new girlfriend but he’s hung up on someone else “I keep pushing, you won’t leave/ Do you realise that she’s not me/ I’m feeling out of mind/ You’re just too hung up, why do I even try?”. Now Lucy is basically saying how she doesn’t want to be in this position where her partner wishes to be with another.

honestly, i’m cool: 20th March 2020 saw the unveiling of debut EP honestly, i’m cool. Comprising of 4 new originals this was a sublime effort which didn’t disappoint in the slightest. Anyhow the opening number being won’t stop talking and this was a delectable slice of synth pop bliss. Also you had dance elements added into the mix. Still this was a phenomenal track which grabbed my attention from the get go, other than the feel good melody you also had refreshingly beautiful vocals whilst those lyrics pointed at some self absorbed guy who inflates his own ego just to impress. it’s cool was yet again a splendid piece of song writing, the whole arrangement emitted a dreaminess, Lucy’s whimsical tones packed plenty of sass whilst these words served as a stark warning to a player whose heart’s not in it. Everything about disposable was on point, whilst I adored each of the 4 tunes this had to be my favourite. Now I found this to be rather upbeat whilst the vocal delivery reminded me of a cross between Ariana Grande and Anne Marie. Then you had those wondrous words, whilst they were uplifting I also found them to be slightly emotional as the story told was crystal clear. This delectable debut came to a close with want me too and this was Dance pop at it’s best. Honestly this number reeled me in at the very first listen, want me too was an anthemic cut revolving around a relationship that’s fizzled out “We’ve dried up, no conversation/ Feel the space, false accusations/ Do you feel it too?/ Why did you, say it’s forever/ When you thought, you could do better/ It all feels so new”. However there is an emotive kicker, even though they went on a break so the guy can get his head together, he’s found someone new.

Running: 15th May saw Lucy Deakin release her first single of 2020 and this being an infectious tune that’s been perfectly penned. Anyhow I’ve had this sumptuous single on repeat and I cannot help but lavish praise onto the end product. Now the gorgeous melody was super smooth, Lucy’s delightful delivery oozed a tenderness whilst those words touched on the theme of escapism “I’ll keep Running away from my problems”. What I found to be rather cute was the fact the one you run to is that special person whose there for you through thick and thin.

not just at christmas: Since the release of Running in May, Deakin went on to drop a trilogy of tracks all of which appeared on the i got bored EP which came out towards the end of October. My thoughts on that 6 track mini album will be coming in it’s own separate post soon. In the meantime 11th December 2020 saw Lucy Deakin provide a festive offering and this being not just at christmas. This impeccable original was backed with an interpretation of santa claus is coming to town. Nothing beats listening to seasonal music no matter what month it is, for starters it gets you excited for what’s to come. Well not just at christmas was a work of art, those lyrics were super cute, Lucy’s vocal delivery was reminiscent to Ariana Grande whilst the marvellous melody had the much expected twinkling. However there is a sad twist as the lyrics painted the picture of falling in love and yearning as you cannot share your Christmas with that special someone, hence why Lucy wants him to be her forever boy. “Merry Christmas to me/ My gift ain’t under the tree” and that gift Deakin alludes to is her boo.

On the whole Lucy Deakin is a gifted individual who can pen pop jams which leave you wanting more. As of 2021 she’s dropped three singles all of which are taken from the upcoming in your head, i’m probably crying EP. I must say those trio of tracks are extremely exquisite and shows that her flame is burning bright.
