Presley Tennant: 600 Miles EP Review

Presley Tennant comes all the way from California, she’s an impeccable singer/ songwriter/ dancer who literally leaves me speechless every time. It was back in 2017 when I was first introduced to her, given the fact Tennant was only 15 years old the songs she was putting out there were out of this world. Presley even auditioned for Season 16 of NBC’s The Voice, she even made it through to the live finals as part of Team Kelly Clarkson.

Well fast forward to the present, Presley Tennant is still releasing exceptional originals which captivate me every single time. Having made her re introduction back in 2021 with Bite The Bullet Presley has gone on to release a further 5 singles and an EP all of which are smothered in plenty of country goodness. Whilst I adore pop music, country is coming in strong as you have the likes of Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, Tim Mcgraw, Priscilla Block, Kacey Musgraves and more. Now 30th November 2022 saw the unveiling of the 600 Miles EP and this comprised of 6 sensational songs all of which enthralled me from start to finish. 600 Miles was the choice opener and this country ballad was an emotive original accompanied by story telling lyrical content which painted a vivid story. The whole instrumental arrangement was whimsical, Tennant’s vibrant vocals packed plenty of oomph whilst the lyrical content was literally an emotional rollercoaster. It was as if Presley was singing from the heart and letting her feelings be known after the distance between the two lovers was too difficult to overcome “I guess it’ s hard to hear a heart break 600 miles away”. Next you had How Many Kisses and this being a heartwarming ballad and if I was to describe it in one word it would have to be cute. You had a swooning melody, Presley’s charming tones were succulently sweet whilst the charming portion came from when Tennant wonder how many kisses with a partner it takes before you can class it as being in love. Mess With My Man was a whimsical cut which served as a stark warning for anyone who wants to pursue a relationship with someone who is off limits. In this case the person being Presley’s romantic partner “This is not about me being jealous/ I’m not the insecure kind/ But find your own fella/ This one’s already mine”. Still this was extremely mesmeric, the vocals wee a breath of fresh air whilst that warning felt as if it came straight from the heart. Following on you had God Forbid We Pray and this being a beautiful Christian country ballad which worked wonders. Now this number was pure perfection, those lyrics were captivating whilst Presley Tennant’s delightful delivery showed a vulnerability. What stood out the most was the story telling lyrics which told the story of someone who is down on luck and turns to God for solace. Pray For Peace continued on with the religious theme and this original packed an emotional kicker. The instrumentation was rather relaxing, Tennant’s vocals radiated a tenderness and then those lyrics were a literal emotional rollercoaster. Here Presley sang about losing someone you cherish deeply (whether that being a friend/ family member or romantic partner). This resulted in a looming darkness and how the person in question turned to the lord to find the strength to carry on. 600 Miles is then capped off with Love’s Gonna Win, there is even a sample of Bill Withers’s We All Need Somebody To Lean On. It actually complimented the title track perfectly, whilst 600 Miles was smothered in heartache as distance proved a stumbling block in the relationship, Love’s Gonna Win offered plenty of hope as she recounted how love can conquer all and at the same time it can be the perfect healer. Delivered with plenty of gusto, Love’s Gonna Win was an uplifting/ glorious track accompanied by a mellowing melody.

Whilst Presley wrote every single tune on this exceptional EP she did have assistance from Nick Autry and Alex Dooley (600 Miles and Loves Gonna Win), Nick Autry (God Forbid We Pray), Jeff Ozier (Mess With My Man), Victoria Banks (How Many Kisses) and finally Harrison Sheckler (Pray For Peace).

All in all Presley Tennant is a country princess who has a number of pleasing songs underneath her belt. 600 Miles is the start of what’s to be an exciting future. Whist she hasn’t released anything this year Presley has been busy gigging but it didn’t stop her releasing A Hallelujah Christmas and this being a spine tingling interpretation of Leonard Cohen.
