The Rubens: Million Man Single Review

Australian indie rock quintet The Rubens are back with a brand new single and this being Million Man. I’ve listened to this enticing track and this is a refreshing piece of perfection. Those vibrant vocals were extremely crisp/ soulful and they resulted in something that was pleasant on the ear.

Now The Rubens compromise of brothers Sam Margin (Guitar/Lead Vocals), Elliott Margin (Keys/Vocals), Zaac Margin (Lead Guitar) and then you have both Scott Baldwin (Drums) and Will ‘Hog’ Zeglis (Bass). This fantastic 5 piece formed in 2011 in Menangle, New South Wales. Two years later they unveiled the debut self titled LP via Warner Bros Records. This amazing album consisted of 11 tasty tracks plus it was even certified platinum. 2016 then saw The Rubens unleash the sophomore Hoops via Warner Bros Records. This LP spawned the likes of Hold Me Back, Hoops, Cut Me Loose, Switchblade, The Night Is On My Side and Hallelujah.

Million Man was produced by Run The Jewels producers/collaborators, brothers Wilder Zoby and Little Shalimar (aka Torbitt Schwartz) after befriending NYC rapper EL-P (Run The Jewels) and the band at the 2013’s Laneway Music festival. Realising that their friendship could lead to a pretty interesting musical partnership, both Zoby and Schwartz flew out to The Ruben’s recording studio in Sydney, Australia.

On the collaboration, Elliott Margin says: “When it came time to look for a producer for this new record, we realised that they’d be the perfect guys to work with. ‘Million Man’ was the first track we worked on in the studio with the boys. It was genuinely just a fun time building the song and being creative together”.

Elliott then went onto say “The song itself kind of came from nowhere, just sitting at the piano and playing whatever came out. As the song developed, the lyrics slowly came and spelled out a story and the rest came from there. The chorus was an easy flowing one, which is rare”.

Whilst writing this review I’ve been listening to The Rubens back catalogue and I’m enthralled with the material they currently have underneath their belts. Million Man is in fact the first single to be taken from the upcoming 3rd LP and I for one cannot wait to have this LP within my hands.

This 5 piece will be gracing the United Kingdom with 3 special shows in April.
