Waking Up Slow is the brand new single from Gabrielle Aplin and it’s an absolute masterpiece. Now this tasty treat features on the upcoming Avalon EP and it only cranks up my desire to have this release within my hands.
Now Gabrielle made a name for herself on YouTube, back then she uploaded cover versions of popular tracks resulting in her becoming an internet sensation. Aplin started her very own record label “Never Fade Records” and self released her first three EPs. Then in 2012 she inked a record deal with Parlophone and went on to release LPs English Rain and Light Up The Dark. December 2016 saw Aplin drop the Miss You EP and it was literally a work of art.
Back to this sparkly single, Waking Up Slow is sumptuous synth pop at its best and Gabrielle’s sweet vocal tones can quite easily give you a sugar rush. Those delightful lyrics were incredibly uplifting and then you had the chorus which can quite easily have you moving to the infectious beat “Oh/ All my nights/ Taste like gold/ Yeah, when I’m with you/ It’s like everything glows/ And all my days/ We can lay low/ Yeah, when we’re waking up/ We’re Waking Up Slow”.
Here is what Aplin had to say regarding this succulent single “‘Waking Up Slow’ is a super positive song! It’s about that euphoric “aha!” moment after feeling perhaps misplaced, or stagnant. It’s about that moment where you decide to just let go, letting what will be, be and choosing to be present”.
Waking Up Slow was produced by Lostboy and the 4 track Avalon EP is set to be released 15th September.
UPDATE: 22nd September saw Gabrielle Aplin unveil the official music video for Waking Up Slow. Directed by Charlotte Rutherford (Marina & The Diamonds ‘Blue’, Fickle Friends ‘Brooklyn’ and M.O ‘Not In Love’) this dreamy 3 minute feature sees Gabrielle performing her single amongst glorious countryside and empty suburban streets while a beautiful cast of bleary-eyed dancers accompany her with contemporary drama.
Here is what Gabrielle had to say regarding the single and video “‘Waking Up Slow’ as a song is about appreciating life as it is and focusing on the positives and deciding to just be. I wanted to focus the video around the idea of not being able to sleep, and turning that night into an adventure instead of a frustration with no real line between reality and a dream. I wanted to incorporate an all female cast to blur the lines between day time and night time whilst having fun with fashion and colour”.
Now Waking Up Slow is a synth pop jam and the dreamlike music video is literally a fun fueled colourful explosion. There is actually a nod to the upcoming EP Avalon (one of the cars sported the number plate AV4LON) and the reason why everyone is up at night is down to an Insomnia epidemic which has sweep the nation (as seen on the front page of the newspaper). I’ve got nothing but praise for Waking Up Slow, I’ve been a fan of Gabrielle Aplin since 2010 but this succulent single has to be her best to date.
