Dan Owen: Open Hands And Enemies EP Review

Dan Owen is an impressive singer/ songwriter who has already supported both Birdy and Kaleo. I’ve been aware of Owen’s music for quite a while having been at that Birdy Roundhouse show this May. Back then he played an impecable set and he even duetted with Jasmine van den Bogaerde on the song Let It All Go.

This talented 24 year old was born and raised in Shrewsbury. I actually see him as someone to watch out for in 2017. Dan has already announced a headline tour in April which culminates in his biggest headline London show to date at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen on April 26th.

I would place Dan’s music in the folk genre and this October saw the release of the Open Hands And Enemies EP. Only 4 tunes feature on this delightful EP and having heard it on a loop leaves me completely mesmerised. Dan’s vocals were ever so rich and you can clearly tell he has a burning passion for writing these superb songs.

Made To Love You was an emotional piano led ballad which sent chills up my spine. This tune was a slice of perfection, Owen’s husky vocal tones oozed plenty of folkish vibes. Made To Love You had been well written and those lyrics examines what keeps people together or drives them apart. “That if I was made to love you/ Then how could you bring me pain/ And if i was made to love you/ How come we’re here again/ Why does it hurt so bad”. Also the music video was mega emotional as it details the breakdown of an abusive relationship and it is all down to alcohol (the woman is actually abusing the man). Whilst it’s drenched with plenty of sadness there is a happy end as they rekindle their love.

Witching Hour leaves me completely captivated. This terrific tune was brimming with plenty of darkness and Owen’s succulent vocals were sheer perfection. The lyrics were packed with a punch and they left me completely enthralled at the same time “This ain’t no Witching Hour/ I’m burning at the stake/ This ain’t no Witching Hour/ I take back my mistakes”. All in all this was an incredible number which Dan delivered with plenty of gusto.

Moonlight is the current single from this exquisite EP and it was a beautiful ballad. Plenty of emotion flowed from those luscious lyrics and Dan’s vocal tones were second to none. Now Moonlight was an acoustic sounding soothing tender ballad leaving me hypnotised at the same time. Actually this track mellowed me out. Also the music tour video is awesome as well, I’m really digging the whole Black and White feel.

Closer (Home Recording) ended what had been a phenomenal EP. This was a stripped back sounding number which flowed plenty of emotion. You had vibrant verses and a catchy chorus “Every sadness every heartache, the closer I get to you/ Every morning every sunset, the closer I get to you/ Every sadness every heartache, the closer I get to you/ The closer I get to you”. The mention of a dark secret and the fact that the girl is hard to get close to does make me wonder if she was previously in an abusive relationship. Still as this song progressed there is a happy ending “You’re the one that fixed it all”.

All in all this was an outstanding EP which showcased Owen’s knack at writing killer songs. I really do hope a full length album is coming in the near future because these 4 tracks leave me with the urge to hear more.

Open Hands And Enemies is available to purchase from iTunes.
