Drawing North are a 5 piece Australian Indie Pop band who have just signed to Universal Music Australia. This group consist of Michael Po, Ethan Sharp, Chad Barnier, Jake Allen and Drew Southwell.
Having formed in 2010, Drawing North started from writing simple pop demos in a garage to selling out their first ever headline show to over 600 people in their hometown of Canberra, Australia. Since then, the 5 friends have constantly been at work, whether it be booking their own 40 date school’s tour of Australia, recording acoustic releases endorsed by Joel Madden of Good Charlotte or playing festivals such as Vans Warped Tour Australia and Groovin The Moo. The band has also had the opportunity to support international and homegrown artists such as Paul Kelly, Sheppard, Jessica Mauboy, Short Stack, Stan Walker, Tonight Alive, The Getaway Plan and more.
Having played over 150 shows Drawing North are set to release debut album El Dorado. later this year. Having been finished in Florida, USA this LP was produced and recorded with James Wisner. Now Wisner produced Paramore’s debut All We Know Is Falling back in 2005.
At present 4 songs have been lifted from El Dorado and these being Forevermore, Only You, Ars Amatoria and the newest being Fire Eyes. Now first single Forevermore, which led to commercial radio success, receiving airplay at Nova Brisbane and KIIS-FM. Drawing North also boasts a strong social engagement, with their music video for the second single from the album, “Only You,” gaining over 50,000 views on Facebook after only four days of release.
Anyhow my first listen to latest single Fire Eyes literally had me hooked. The song is very pop, aided by infectious plus it oozed plenty of synths. The sparkling vocal delivery actually reminds me of Fall Out Boy. “The song was written about a strong relationship and one half being burned by betrayal. The lyric and title, “fire eyes,” was taken as a reflection of the intensity of the relationship and the betrayal that followed. Being through a few tough break ups we wanted to tell a story about the intensity that surrounds cheating and betrayal”. Well everything about this was utterly contagious and it is most definitely one you can quite easily stick on repeat.
As for the other singles lifted from El Dorado, each were right corkers. Ars Amatoria was an upbeat cut which easily gets you moving whenever you listen to it. Whilst Only You is one of my favourites from Drawing North and this being down to the fact it was a beautiful dreamy ballad. For me getting attached to a ballad is unusual as I like my songs packed with a punch. Then you have the debut single Forevermore which leaves me mesmerised whenever it’s played.
